He starts with a word of caution: he used the best camera angles, and the knife does not look that well-made, but the blade is pretty sharp – he demonstrates by slicing off a piece of paper with ease. He says he’ll explain why the blade became so tiny as an end result.

He starts with the wrench, and says he’ll be heating the curved part of it to make the blade. To make sure the ring is not deformed, he’ll be dipping just the ring in water to solidify it. He says the surfaces of the wrench are curved to make it easier to hold, so he’ll have to flatten it to put a handle in.

He marks the end of the wrench where the head is, and cuts it at an angle to give it a head-start on a blade. Then he places the cut wrench in a pile of hot coals, dips the ring end in water then pounds the rest of the body with a hammer while it’s red-hot. The ring turns out deformed, so he says he’ll try to shape it back.

He places the wrench back in the coals, gets it out to pound then back again to heat, repeating the process until he gets the wrench flattened enough. He hammers the body out into a long, curved blade, filing to keep the shape. He admits he’s not that good a blacksmith, and will not make excuses for his handiwork, but continues to make the karambit because he says it’s a challenge and he wants to finish the project.

He sands the whole thing to smooth out the rough edges. He also smooths down the ring, even the inner portion which will serve as the handle or finger grip. He hardens the blade and sands it with fine sandpaper to clean it up, then tempers it in a toaster oven. When it turns gold, it’s done. He uses a whetstone, water and dish stone to sharpen the blade, gives it a few notches with the grinder and adds a paracord wrap on the handle to finish it off.
