Austin Haughwaout rigged up a semi-automatic gun to a drone last year and recorded it shooting into a forested area. Of course, this did not make the FAA very happy (ARS Technica Article) and by November they were served with all kinds of requests for documents.
According to ARS Technica, the father declined to participate in the request for documents since the FAA did not file formal charges.
The elder Haughwout declined the government’s efforts, telling the FAA in an e-mail that because the agency had not alleged a particular violation, then he was under no obligation to comply.
In Feb 2016 the FAA took both father and son to court where US District Judge Jeffrey A. Meyer asked for further briefing. At this time, they are still not charged with any crime.
