The video shows live footage of a police officer-related shooting incident in Athens, Georgia. Police released the body cam video of an Athens-Clarke County police officer who had shot a man one early morning.
Police said preliminary information indicates that at approximately 3:00 a.m., an officer was on routine patrol and stopped at the Golden Pantry in the 2200 block of Barnett Shoals Road. The officer saw two males pouring liquor into a cup and one of them had possession of a firearm.
Police said the officer gave multiple commands to Justin Tramell Scott, 22 to disarm himself. The video shows the officer approaching holding his gun out. When Scott reached for his firearm, police said the officer fired shots, striking Scott.
The video shows Scott bolting from the scene, pursued by the officer who us yelling at him to stop and identifying himself as a police officer. Gunshots are heard and the officer can be seen and heard reporting on his radio that shots had been fired, and giving his location as he runs after Scott. At one point, Scott falls flat but is able to get up quickly and keep running. The officer keeps yelling orders for Scott to lay down on the ground, to no avail.
After being shot, Scott fled and was apprehended a short distance later by another officer who responded to the scene. In the video, the officer is clearly winded after having had to chase Scott for quite a distance. A police car is shown, along with the responding officers who had apprehended Scott.
Scott was taken to a local hospital for treatment for a non-life-threatening injury. No officers were injured during this incident.
The GBI will conduct an independent investigation to determine what occurred during the incident. When the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Clarke County District Attorney’s Office for any action they deem appropriate.
