About Krav Maga

Krav Maga, which translates to “contact combat,” is a self-defense system that was developed for the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF). It consists of many techniques and combinations from different martial arts such as aikido, judo, wrestling, boxing and fight training.

It is a fighting style known for its focus on real-world applications, and for its brutal yet efficient counter-attacks. Designed by Hungarian-Israeli martial artist Imi Lichtenfeld, Krav Maga was taken from street fighting skills. Lichtenfeld used his training as a boxer and wrestler to defend the Jewish quarter against threats in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia in the 1930s. He migrated to Israel in the 1940s and began giving training to what would become the IDF. This training was further developed to become what is now modern Krav Maga, which has since been tweaked for civilian, law enforcement and military uses.

This defense style pinpoints the application of threat neutralization, aggression and combined defensive and offensive maneuvers in any given situation. While Krav Maga is mainly used by the IDF’s special units, reconnaissance and infantry brigades, other variations are currently being employed by local Israeli law enforcement and national intelligence organizations. Krav Maga is also being taught internationally by various martial arts and self-defense groups.

Real World Applications

An example of real-life Krav Maga application for civilians is when threatened by a gunman. Video demonstrations on Krav Maga show that when a gun is pointed directly at a person, it is important to neutralize the threat as quickly as possible.  After disarming the gunman, the victim can now go on a simultaneous defensive and offensive tactic in a matter of seconds. This can be accomplished by a series of seemingly simple yet efficient movements when done correctly.
